10 ingredients

Ingredients

  • ½ cup apple cider or juice
  • ¼ cup vinegar
  • ¼ cup sliced green onion
  • 2 Tbsp butter or margarine
  • 2 Tbsp bottled steak sauce
  • 2 Tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp dried tarragon, crushed
  • ¼ tsp pepper
  • optional, for garnish apple slices

Method

  1. In a 1 1/2-quart saucepan, combine the apple cider, vinegar, sliced green onion, butter or margarine, bottled steak sauce, honey, salt, dried tarragon and pepper. Bring the mixture to boiling; simmer 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  2. Baste over meat or vegetables during the last 15 to 20 minutes of barbecuing. Heat and pass the remaining sauce. Garnish with apple slices, if desired.

Notes

From Better Homes and Gardens, June 1974. Also usable as a meat marinade. Unlike most sauces, this is not thickened but has an au jus consistency, ideal for basting. Makes about 3/4 cup sauce.
