French Garlic Bread
Ingredients
- 2 pkg yeast
- 2½ cup warm water
- 7 cup about flour
- 2 tsp garlic salt
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- sesame seed
- 1 egg white
- 1 tbsp cold water
Method
- In a mixer bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Add 2 cups flour, the garlic salt and minced garlic; beat until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to make a soft dough.
- Turn out on a floured board. Knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Shape into a ball. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease all over. Cover; let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk, about 1 1/2 hours.
- Punch down; divide into two equal parts. Let rest 10 minutes. Roll each portion to a rectangle, about 10x14 inches. Starting at one long edge, roll up and pinch along the edge to seal the seam. Shape each loaf by rolling the ends back and forth under your palms until the ends are pointed and the loaf is about 18 inches long.
- Place the loaves on a greased baking sheet sprinkled with sesame seed. With a sharply pointed knife, cut diagonal slashes about 2 inches apart across the tops. Do not cover. Let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 30 minutes.
- Place a pan of hot water on the bottom shelf of the oven. Bake 20 minutes at 375 degrees. Brush the loaves with the slightly beaten egg white combined with the cold water. Continue baking 20 minutes or until done.
