Ingredients

  • 1 clove garlic, peeled
  • 1 tsp unsalted butter
  • 4 about 2 lbs large Idaho potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 2 cup half and half
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • Gruyere cheese, grated

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Rub a 9 x 13 baking dish all over with the garlic, then butter the dish.
  2. Place the sliced potatoes in a saucepan with cold water and salt. Bring to a boil and cook for 1 minute. Drain well and pat dry. Place the potatoes in a bowl and season generously with salt and pepper.
  3. Mix the half-and-half and milk together in a small bowl.
  4. Layer half of the potatoes in the baking dish. Cover with half the Gruyere cheese and half the liquid mixture. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and liquid.
  5. Bake for 50-60 minutes till tender and bubbly and golden on top.
