Ingredients

  • 1 pkg dry yeast
  • ¼ cup warm water
  • 2½ cup flour
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Method

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the warm water. Meanwhile, combine the dry ingredients in a bowl. Cut in the shortening until crumbly.
  2. Add the buttermilk and yeast; mix well. Refrigerate, if desired.
  3. Knead lightly on a floured surface; roll to about 1-inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter. Place in a greased 7-by-11-inch pan. Let rise slightly.
  4. Bake at 400 degrees until brown, about 12 to 15 minutes.

Notes

Yield: about 1 dozen.
