French Fried Onion Rings (Beer Batter)
Ingredients
- 2 large sweet onions
- 1¼ cup flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 cup beer
- 1 Tbsp salad oil
- for sprinkling salt
Method
- Peel and slice the onions about 3/8-inch thick; separate into rings. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, egg, beer and salad oil; blend until smooth.
- Dip the onion rings into the batter. Heat deep fat to 375 degrees. Fry the rings 2 to 3 minutes until golden. Drain on absorbent paper; sprinkle with salt.
- To freeze: Arrange the fried rings in a single layer on trays. Place in the freezer until frozen. Pack in moisture-vapor-proof packages. Label, date and return to the freezer. To reheat, spread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 5 to 7 minutes.
Notes
Clipping. Yield: 6 servings. A beer-batter version (distinct from the milk-soaked Rosauers onion rings under Vegetables).
